FTPs are a method specifically designed for transferring files. It is a server to client protocol where the client (you) connects to a server to download your files. Downloading via FTP is a common method for people to get their warez. Most FTPs will run on port 21, and while you can use a web browser to access them it is recommended that you use an FTP client such as FlashFXP. An FTP is a web-accessible directory that is hosted on another computer. Once connected to an FTP, you can browse the files and folders as you would your own files and folders, selecting and downloading the ones you want.

Getting FTPs on WarezNET

To get your links you should either search or browse the download forums. FTP downloads will have the icon24.gif icon next to them in the search or listed on the forum.

Once you have found the download topic you will see the address of the download. Copy the FTP address by selecting it then Right Click and click Copy or press Ctrl + C on the keyboard. The address will be in one of the formats:

ftp://username:password@123.123.123.123:21/path/her/

ftp://123.123.123.123/

ftp://username:password@123.123.123.123:5980/

Make sure you copy the whole address then open it in your FTP client.

Types of FTPs

Pub

A Public FTP, or Pub for short, is an FTP that is totally public. These do not require a user name or a password to join. A pub is commonly used in the free software industry as a cheap and effective way for the company to release the product, such as Gentoo Linux Distribution FTPs.

Pubs are commonly used in the warez world because of their lack of security. Using a port scanning program, such as Grims Ping, you can easily find pubs that you can connect to. Once you've found a pub, you must "tag" it before posting it on WarezNET. Tagging involves making it difficult for the systems administrator to realize what you've done to the system. More on this can be found in the proving section. The tag has to be made in such a way that the administrator of the FTP does not know it is there, and so other people except the intended ones get access. Combined with the path (of folders) and the ip, this is posted on FXP boards by the person who made the pub. Since anyone has access to these FTPs, there is a kind of honor code where you do not "tag" another persons pub. So if there is already a tag on a FTP you come across, you leave it and move on.

These can be very fast, but can also become very slow if people put their tags due to excessive usage. Pubs are becoming more rare however, because all an administrator needs to do is not allow download and upload permissions, and a pub cannot be made. As well, an administrator can also just put a user name and password on the FTP to stop people from tagging it. There is no hacking whatsoever involved in making a pub.

Pubstro

Pubstros or Stros are still FTPs, but are hacked ones. They do not needs to run on port 21, and can run on whatever port the hacker sets it on. Stros are typically more reliable than pubs, because the hacker needed to hack their way into the persons server or company FTP. This is where there is no anonymous access, and so cannot be done by anyone. Even if the administrator changes his password or IP address of his server, the hacker typically has administrator privileges with his own account he has made, and he can find the servers IP again anyway.

This is the method that the "scene" (the collective name for all the people involved in making releases and spreading them) uses because of the FXP protocol. It is where files can be easily transfered from one pubstro to another, at very high speeds. This is how the scene works, with releases appearing on a few stros, then are quickly FXPd across to other stros, and so on.
The very highest stros are called topsites, and very few people have access to these and rightly so. They are typically hacked universities, and other such places with large amounts of space and speed. This is where most of the warez on the internet originates. You must be very trust worthy to get access to one, or must know the administrator personally. These are the ones that the FBI and such want to take down, because it is such a large central repository of warez.

Private FTP

A private FTP is one that is hosted on a forum members home computer. These are almost always password protected and often require contributions to gain access. A private FTP is very easy to set up and is a GREAT way for a noob to quickly rise to a full member. Private FTP's are generally slower due to the fact that they're run off of a home internet connection, but are reliable and generally have a fair selection of content.

Topsites

Sites or Topsites are the top of the "Warez Chain". Best sites ie. Topsites have the best release groups as members. All Topsites/sites have traders (called couriers) and maximum of normally 24 hours, but the average is around 30mins per release, although most sites have them come in at under a minute. Topsites/sites are legitimate servers and look down on script kiddies. The speeds of sites are normally 100Mbit - 1GBit, but sometimes going over that as well.

And a bit of a brush up. FXP isn't the scene. No groups trade using FXP; as it is basically the leaking of releases or spreading to non-affiliated sites. Even the best FXP board are slow. Topsites are generally linked through a network of SSL-secured FTP servers that almost always use FTP bouncers to hide their real IP, and require predefined ident and IP/hostname to be accessed.

FTP Clients

FlashFXP - FlashFXP is the most commonly used FTP client. It can be found in the application section of the WarezNET forum. For basic use, copy the entire FTP address and paste it into any spot on the quick connect menu. All the information will automatic be put in the corresponding places. Features like this are what make FlashFXP the client of choice. After connecting to the ftp, you can simply drag files back and fourth from your computer (left side) to the ftp (right side)

SmartFTP is another good FTP client.
